Are Dedicated Scanners Headed for Extinction?

Recent debates on the Internet have been questioning whether “pure scanners are heading for extinction”. This is the suggestion of Rich Payne in an online debate at AIIM (Association for Information and Image Management).

The early, original scanners were just scanners with a single function – scanning an image of the document onto a computer or microfilm. With time the functionality increased to include image manipulation and OCR along with keywords to help index the documents.

At the desktop size scanners have merged with copiers, printers and faxes. Will this start happening for commercial large volume scanners?

The replies suggest this is not the case, and this, according to John Turner is because

“Multifunction devices, even with add on software, aren't yet capable of even moderate efficiency of a mid-size scanner”.

So any company with large scale scanning needs should consider investing in a suitable dedicated scanner.
